Abstract
This article investigates the sources of uncertainty in the dynamic response of turbine blades equipped with under-platform dampers (UPDs). While UPDs play a critical role in energy dissipation and vibration control, their effectiveness is influenced by various uncertainty factors, including contact pressure distribution, manufacturing variability, wear, loading history and many others. Among these, uncertainty due to initial loading conditions and assembly procedures is particularly significant, as small variations in the damper’s positioning lead to measurable differences in the system’s response. Through a combination of experimental testing and numerical simulations, this study quantifies these effects and provides practical guidelines for improving the reliability of both measurements and simulations. The findings highlight the need for UPD designs that minimize assembly-induced variability, and stress the importance of accurately matching experimentally measured pressure distributions with numerical models.
