Abstract
This thesis investigates the complex landscape of decarbonisation with a specific focus on energy net-importers and net-exporters. Drawing on case studies of the United Kingdom (UK) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), this thesis highlights their distinct paths and challenges. The UK, as a net-importing nation, grapples with energy security concerns amid external economic influences, while the UAE, a major net-exporter of fossil fuels, faces the challenge of reconciling transition efforts with its economy. In the UK, it was found that biomass-based generating capacities persisted despite fuel price fluctuations, emphasising the necessity of maintaining a diversified portfolio of biomass supply. From a net-exporters perspective, carbon capture and storage (CCS) emerges as pivotal in decarbonisation with direct air capture removing hard-to-abate emissions. Tailored strategies critically will need to emerge for both nations, with the UK emphasising the role of existing infrastructure and biomass-based technologies, while the UAE prioritising clean energy initiatives. By understanding their differences and leveraging tailored approaches, these nations can navigate the transition through strategies focused on biomass in the UK and natural gas in the UAE, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future while safeguarding economic prosperity and energy security.
