Abstract
This thesis is divided into three chapters.
Chapter one provides a discussion into the stabilisation and reactivity of carbene and carbenoid intermediates. A review of cyclopropanes and cyclopropanation methods is then presented and select synthetic applications of aminocyclopropanes are discussed.
Chapter two details investigations of the addition of dihalocarbenes to enantiomerically pure ene-sulfonamides and features the ring-expansion and functionalisation of these substrates. An exploration of the reactivity of cyclic ene-sulfonamides with metal carbenoids is then presented.
Chapter three provides experimental procedures and characterisation data for the synthesised compounds.
