Abstract
A critical period for global biodiversity governance has been reached, with the agreement of major global environmental treaties setting the agenda for the next decade of action. Improved governance is vital to the achievement of these goals, and the United Nations (UN) is an important organization for supporting countries in these efforts. However, there is currently a research gap surrounding the UN’s system-wide work on biodiversity. Without investigating and evaluating the structure of this system, we risk promoting ineffective cross-UN coordination and collaboration efforts on biodiversity. As a first step to addressing this knowledge gap, we mapped a network of the biodiversity-related partnerships between different UN entities to evaluate the structure of this system. This study adds to a growing evidence base investigating the structure of collaborations across governance systems in order to explore the effectiveness of these systems for supporting environmental protection.
