Abstract
Compressive failure in unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced polymers remains a critical limitation in structural design. This study integrates findings from previous Raman spectroscopy analysis and a novel focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) methodology to investigate fundamental micromechanical failure in high-modulus (HM) polyacrylonitrile carbon fibres under compressive loading. FIB-SEM offers high-resolution 3D imaging of fibre break geometries. The combination of Raman spectroscopy and FIB-SEM confirms shear-type fragmentation and interfacial debonding mechanisms previously predicted through Raman analysis, enabling a deeper understanding of compressive failure processes in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRPs). To enable FIB-SEM imaging of model composite samples, careful sample preparation is required, following specific steps to allow imaging to be carried out.
