Abstract
The spread of invasive pathogens linked to increasing global connectivity is a major driver of biodiversity losses worldwide. Once novel pathogens enter a naïve community an arms race is launched between susceptible hosts and the pathogen. The results of these host-pathogen interactions are difficult to predict, and can generate heterogeneous responses between host species and populations. The amphibian chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is an example of an emerging pathogen causing unprecedented biodiversity loss. In this thesis I explore the innate (Antimicrobial peptides) and extended (microbiome) immune traits associated with observed intraspecific and interspecific heterogeneity in responses to Bd infection.
