Conversational agents (CAs), such as chatbots and voice assistants, continue to infiltrate a number of critical domains and blur the lines between human-human and human-computer interaction. Accordingly, the work introduced in this paper examines how these CAs can be designed more collaboratively in interdisciplinary settings to better align them with different stakeholders’ values in accordance
with the principles of Value-Sensitive Design (VSD). The project is structured over three phases where: (i) pertinent challenges and barriers to achieving collaboratively designed, value-sensitive CAs are identified, (ii) a practical framework is developed in response to these barriers and is operationalised through a design toolkit, (iii) the effects of the framework and toolkit are explored through design workshops with teams creating CAs and their stakeholders. The project is summarised in this paper, highlighting preliminary results and outlining future planned work, as well as the authors’ backgrounds and the project’s alignment with the CUI@CHI 2024 workshop.
