COVID-19 induced type 1 diabetes: a systematic review of case reports and series

Abstract
Aims: Recent evidence suggests a potential link between COVID-19 and type 1 diabetes (T1DM). The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of reported cases of new-onset T1DM following COVID-19 infection.
Methods: We used the PubMed and Scopus library databases and identified 20 eligible articles between January 2020-June 2022.
Results: Twenty individuals were men (54%, 20/37) and seventeen (46%, 17/37) were
women with a median age of 11.5 years. Most patients (89.1%, 33/37) presented with
diabetic ketoacidosis. Twenty-three people (62.1%) presented at the time of positive COVID-19 testing and 14 (37.9%) previously had symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection or positive test. Diabetes-related symptoms in the preceding weeks (3 days to 12 weeks) were reported in 86.3% (19/22), while 3 people (13.6%, 3/22) had no clinical features before diagnosis. Data was not provided for 15 cases. Twenty-eight people (100%, 28/28) remained on insulin. In 9 cases (24.3%, 9/37) information
on long-term treatment was not provided.
Conclusions: Although rare, new-onset T1DM is a condition healthcare professionals
may expect to see following COVID-19 infection
