Abstract
Littering is a worrying problem across the globe. Ultimately, littering behaviour leads to many negative impacts on the environment. Even though an ever-growing number of interventions to induce proper disposal behaviour are trialled every year including increasing environmental awareness, introducing new infrastructure and technology, and supporting community development the impacts of littering are still significant.
In human behaviour, motives play the role of psychological mechanisms formed to accommodate the daily needs of a person. In particular, motives can spur better disposal behaviour, by nurturing love for nature, escalating social status through practising recycling or avoiding contamination by waste disposal. Furthering research on the Design for Behaviour Change, this dissertation aims to develop a Motives-Centred Design (MCD) framework and toolkit to facilitate designers in designing better disposal interventions to reduce littering through motives-centred approach. The toolkit and framework are intended to stimulate designers' creativity in the early design stages and offer a new framework and toolkit to develop products, systems and services to encourage proper disposal behaviour.
The MCD toolkit consists of two phases, which are: Discover phase and Define phase. In the Discover phase, designers obtain an in-depth understanding of the problem or situation, identify the target user and behaviour and propose relevant strategies and behavioural impacts. The Discover canvas and three types of cards are presented to ease the process of gathering information and setting up the direction of the design project, which includes, Target user and Target Behaviour, Strategies and Behavioural Impacts cards.
In the Define phase, designers are supported through the Motives-Centred Design canvas and three sets of cards, which are Motive categories, Motive and Tactics, and Motive and Induced Emotions cards when developing design concepts for disposal interventions. Designers use MCD canvas as a brainstorm sheet to map out ideas, and the three types of cards provided for idea generation to prompt creativity and develop design solutions for new disposal interventions.
