From industry 4.0 to industry 5.0 in construction safety management: a comparative systematic review

Abstract
The economic importance and high-risk nature of the construction sector make construction safety management (CSM) a critical research area. As Industry 4.0 (I4.0) matures and Industry 5.0 (I5.0) emerges, related studies have increased but remain fragmented, with no review systematically comparing this transition. This study addresses that gap through a systematic literature review of 191 articles, combining bibliometric and content analysis. The findings show that I5.0 does not replace I4.0 but redefines the role of technology in CSM, shifting it from automated safety control toward human support. This transition reflects a broader movement from Safety-I, which emphasizes failure prevention, to Safety-II, which emphasizes resilience and successful performance. However, this transition process remains incomplete, as I5.0 is still supported more by conceptual discussion than by empirical evidence. I4.0 improves decision-making efficiency but faces barriers, including limited model generalizability and technological capability constraints, while I5.0 highlights human-robot collaboration but still faces compatibility challenges. Finally, a conceptual framework and future research directions are proposed to guide technology adoption in CSM.
