Abstract
Recycling magnesium alloy chips offers tangible economic and environmental benefits. However, the presence of impurities such as oxides on the surface of the chips could pose potential issues for their castability when used in foundry processes. This study employs stir casting to pour molten chips and ingots into a complex-shaped steel mould, comparing their castability. It also explores casting methods that could enhance the yield of good-quality castings. The findings indicate that, under appropriate casting conditions, both chips and ingots can produce intact castings. However, castings made from chips are more prone to surface slump, while those from ingots are more likely to suffer from hot tearing. This could be attributed to the smaller grain size in chip castings.
