Abstract
One of the typical measures employed to mitigate the settlements in buildings due to tunnelling consists of the execution of embedded walls located between the tunnel and the buildings. The merit of this solution has been mainly assessed through centrifuge testing and numerical analyses, although there is evidence of its efficiency in real cases. However, most of these studies focus on the short-term behaviour and do not assess scenarios where time-dependent settlements occur, as in saturated clayey deposits. In this paper, a study on the evolution with time of the efficiency of an impermeable embedded wall designed to mitigate tunnelling-induced deformations in a soil subjected to a consolidation process is presented. For that purpose, 2D coupled-consolidation numerical analysis using the finite element method were employed. The simplified numerical model was established having as reference the geometry and geotechnical conditions observed in the cross-section P10A of the Section 63 of the Green Line of the Lisbon Metro. The results show that the efficiency of the embedded wall is considerably affected by the variation with time of the position of the water table. The influence of the consolidation process and of the presence of the wall on the lining forces of the
