Abstract
Metro of Santiago Line 3 Project considers the construction of an underground line which will have 17 new stations covering about 22 kms length. This line will be connected with the existing lines and the future Line 6. The projected
Line 3 will be developed through differents soils units and nearby to many existing structures and important story
buildings, like the Santiago’s Cathedral and the Main Campus of University of Chile. This article describes the
numerical modelling of structures with complex geometries and secuencial excavations, such as tunneling junctions,
tunnels with variable cross sections and interference with existing structures. These analyses focused to identify
stresses over projected underground structures and induced settlements over existing construction buildings.
Numerical modelling includes technical aspects such as: Dimensions of model, elaboration of geometries and element meshes, construction sequences, traffic overloads and existing buildings, selection of constitutive models, time and resources required for analysis.
