Understanding mechanisms of learning: a realist evaluation of the MRes research methods module

Abstract
This study conducted a realist evaluation of an MRes Research Module to identify what mechanisms enable or hinder learning, for whom, and in what contexts, to inform more effective and equitable postgraduate research training. Research methods training is a cornerstone of postgraduate education supporting students in independent research. However, its effectiveness varies, and there is limited understanding of how teaching strategies produce different outcomes for diverse students. A qualitative, realist evaluation approach was employed, analysing postgraduate student experiences through the Context-Mechanism-Outcome (CMO) framework to explain how and why specific strategies succeeded or failed. Ten MRes Bioengineering students were purposively recruited to ensure representation across a wide range of disciplines. Data were collected through a qualitative survey capturing their perceptions and experiences of the Research Methods Module. Workshops, authentic assessments and field-specific supervision were identified as effective mechanisms for learning. However, generic materials and inconsistent support hindered progress. This study proposes the ‘Adaptive Nexus Model for Postgraduate Training’, a practice-oriented framework that maps context-sensitive learning pathways across dry-lab, wet-lab, and computational disciplines. It shows that teaching effectiveness depends on disciplinary alignment and supervisory engagement, offering programme leaders actionable guidance to improve equity of learning outcomes across diverse cohorts.
