Synthesis and reactivity of titanium pincer complexes

Abstract
The vast chemistry of pincer complexes for small molecule activation and catalysis has mostly focussed on the late transition metals, with the rest of the periodic table largely unexplored. Titanium, the first in the group 4 metals has a rich history for catalysis, bond activations and redox chemistry, as well as being one of the most earth abundant transition metals. This project aimed to harness both the success of pincer ligand chemistry and the reactivity of the titanium. Development of a successful synthesis via lithium reagents led to the first fully characterised titanium ‘PCP’ pincer complex, with a unique ligand rearrangement in the case of Ti(IV), as well as monomer and dimer formation. These complexes were probed for their reactivity with small molecules such as H2 and CO. They showed reactivity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, including the formation of a rare Ti(III) chlorohydride complex which was isolated and structurally characterised.
