Abstract
Laser cladding is a welding technique that has been widely used to remanufacture/repair
workpieces due to its high design freedom to rebuild areas of damage and produce relatively
low residual stress. However, the process often introduces a columnar grain structure,
heterogenetic phase distribution, and various sizes of voids in the cladding layer for high-strength steel. These problems could result in considerable variation in the microstructure and
hardness across the cladding layer, welding interface, and base metal, thereby initiating cracks from these defects under uniaxial or cyclic loading conditions. This study attempts to explore the feasibility of a new hybrid remanufacturing/repairing method that integrates the laser cladding with a subsequent hot deformation process and heat treatment to refine grain structure and eliminate large voids.
