Abstract
The fundamental challenge facing our industry over the next few decades is expected to be climate change. Our current
assumption is that emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO
2
will become more and more tightly regulated. This drives us
to look for improved ways to reduce net CO
2
emissions in the manufacture and use of hydraulic cements for large scale
construction applications. A recent UNEP-supported study [1] found that the current approach of using SCMs such as slags,
fly ashes and natural pozzolans was reaching its limits due to lack of sufficient raw material sources of suitable quality.
Thus, alternative low-CO
2
approaches will be required. These include manufacture of artificial pozzolans such as calcined
clays, which are preferably used together with limestone powders due to their chemical synergies. But this paper is devoted
to another approach: the manufacture of alternative hydraulic clinkers giving inherently lower carbon footprints than OPC.
