Abstract
In the first chapter it is shown that the physical properties of relativity, causality and positive mass-spectrum can be expressed as regularity properties of certain functions occurring in any theory of fields. Some properties of regular functions of many variables are noted, and a simplified proof of a useful emma of Dyson is given for completeness. This lemma is used in chapter two to prove dispersion relations for processes of the type A+B > C+D. In chapter three unitarity is used below threshold to relate the unphysical region of these relations to physical S-matrix elements for simpler processes, by means of analytic continuation and integral equations.
