Abstract
After analysing for nine years (1990 to 1998) the larval and adult populations of the Japanese beetle in eight different places of Terceira Island it was possible to identify fluctuations and places of mass rearing of this pest associated with a dissemination pattern.
Starting with the analysis of these field data and associating them with climatic parameters, in particular with the
direction from where the wind blows, temperature and above all rainfall associated with the knowledge of the places (kind of soil inclination) two kinds of areas of dissemination were identified, primary and secondary areas inside the total area infested in Terceira by the Japanese beetle.
From the data collected in the field it was possible to make a validation using the "Japanese beetle rule model", not
only to identify the pattern of dissemination from place to place, but also to predict, in Spring, before the adults appear, its population level in such way as to be able to rationalise the possible ways of fighting against this pest.
