Abstract
Contemporary global migration is increasingly driven by violence, conflict and climate change-related disasters. A decade ago, the 2015 refugee crisis sparked public and academic debate on arrival structures for newcomers. For those who reach EU territories, the urgent need for housing remains acute, shaped by discriminatory policies, Europe’s deepening housing crisis and a pervasive perception of affordable housing scarcity.
This paper investigates how collective housing systems create multicultural urban spaces in European cities. Through an analysis of social and collaborative housing projects in Barcelona and Vienna, our research identifies key factors to enhance the social and spatial integration of newcomers.
