Abstract
The range of disciplines we now see in science, social science and management have not always existed. Emerging disciplines take time to become established and accepted. For example, psychology had its roots in philosophy and biology. Parrish (1967:1) states that “Economics, before 1870, was an obscure topic struggling for survival in the curricula of American colleges and universities”, dominated by political economy, itself drawing on history, politics, and philosophy. Strategic management’s emergence in the 1950s and 1960s had its theoretical foundations mainly in economics and industrial organization, but also from organizational theory, sociology, and psychology (Guerras-Martín, Madhok & Montoro-Sánchez, 2013).
