Abstract
The functional evolution of the gut metabolome in neonatology, especially in premature infants, is not fully understood. This study investigates the relationship between the gut microbiome and metabolome in early development using advanced analytical chemistry techniques. The study utilizes untargeted RP LC-MS based lipidomics and targeted LC-MS assays to analyse neonate faecal samples for lipid and tryptophan metabolism, including in the context of NEC. Several significant pairwise interactions between factors like birthweight, infections, mode of delivery, and chorioamnionitis were identified, highlighting potential lipid biomarkers. The study also explores the association between the gut metabolome and eczema, as well as its role in NEC pathogenesis and prognosis. In a pilot study, fatty acyls, glycolipids, and sphingolipids were found to be elevated in NEC cases, suggesting their involvement in NEC pathogenesis. The targeted method identified specific metabolite differences in NEC diagnosis, emphasizing the potential role of certain compounds in the disease. The study emphasizes the significance of lipid metabolism and its impact on various health conditions in neonates. The untargeted lipidomics assay shows promise as a predictive tool for eczema development. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the gut metabolome in neonatology, informing our understanding of the complex interplay between the gut microbiome and metabolome in early development and its implications for neonatal health.
