Abstract
The hydrodynamic interaction between a translating sphere and moving past a cylinder
of arbitrary length at rest is investigated. A characteristic interaction scale known as the
interseparation distance, the minimum distance between the sphere centre and the
cylinder centreline, is introduced. Two diametric limits in this interseparation distance
are investigated. The first where the interseparation is large and the second where it is
small. A slender body theory representation of the cylinder is used in an appropriately
defined outer region for each limit. A two-term logarithmic correction to the Stokes
drag in the interseparation distance is obtained for the large limit. In the small
interseparation limit, a leading logarithmic correction is obtained and it is shown that
lubrication forces may be neglected at this order.
