Abstract
<jats:p>Advanced constitutive models, such as those formulated in the bounding surface plasticity framework, enable a reliable representation of sand behaviour and have been shown successful in predicting the response of monopiles subjected to monotonic lateral loading. They, however, have a large number of input parameters which may require a lengthy calibration process. The current paper explores the application of a simpler NorSand constitutive model in the modelling of monopile response under monotonic lateral loading. This model, formulated in the critical state framework, requires a small number of parameters for its calibration. The NorSand formulation is briefly introduced and the model is calibrated against experimental data for Dunkirk sand. Simulations of recent lateral pile load tests in this dense marine sand are then presented and the results compared against field measurements, demonstrating that predictions are in good agreement with the field measurements.</jats:p>
