Abstract
Background: Over time, diabetes has been defined based on different biomarkers, including
fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or 2-hour plasma glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test (2hOGTT) and,
more recently, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). We examined the influence of diagnostic definitions on both
the population prevalence of diabetes and the classification of previously-undiagnosed individuals as
with vs. without diabetes in a pooled analysis of data from population-based health examination
surveys in different world regions.
